On September 13, 2023, Brazilian PTO (INPI) announced that the action of Matchmaking in Green Technologies reached an expressive result in 2023. So far, the actions involved 506 people in 20 countries, among suppliers and demanders of environment-friendly technologies, creating 96 matches between them.

This project emerged from the framework of the dialogue between the EUROCLIMA+ Program and Brazil, seeking to fill knowledge gaps on the use of patents as a mechanism for the diffusion of green technologies, mainly those that reduce climate impact (Priority Action 9).

The objective is to establish commercial partnerships and joint technological projects in the field of green technologies, focusing on renewable energy, green hydrogen, sustainable agriculture, and waste management (technologies covered in INPI’s Green Patents Program). For technology providers, the project generated opportunities to disseminate information about their products, expand their networks, and connect with potential customers. From the point of view of technology seekers, it was an opportunity to learn about advances in their area of activity and potentially find solutions to the challenges identified.

The initiative was launched in the event “Actions to promote the business environment in green technologies: innovation, intellectual property, and sustainability” on May 11th, 2023, aiming to attract Science and Technology Institutions – ICTs, such as universities and research and development centers, as well as European and Latin American companies (especially from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Mexico) for commercial or technological partnerships. Specialists from Brazil and abroad discussed topics such as “the importance of green innovation for Latin American businesses”, “institutional and financial support for green innovation”, “successful strategies for sustainable innovative businesses” and “intellectual property rights, innovation, and gender”.

From June 22nd to 28th, 2023, 16 technologies and projects were publicly presented, and from June 21st to July 7th, 2023, business rounds and closed bilateral matchmaking dialogues were held between the parties demanding and offering technologies, seeking to converge mutual interests.

It is worth noting that, affirmative diversity and gender criteria were observed during all stages of the initiative, from the formation of the project’s team of experts to the participating suppliers and demanders. As a result of this effort, the initiative had gender parity, so that 49% of participants identified as women and 51% as men.
